This is a free program funded through Association of Independent Schools and Colleges in Alberta (AISCA). It is offered to independent schools in the Central region to provide screening, assessment, consultation, capacity building, classroom strategies, group learning and professional development supports to schools. Supports are available from an occupational therapist, physical therapist, occupational therapy/ physical therapy assistant, speech-language pathologist, speech-language pathologist assistant, behaviour consultant and psychologist. The goal of this program is to build the capacity of school staff so they can best support the students within their school program.

Possible Program Services

This is a capacity building model, therefore, supports will be tailored based on child need and the skill development required for the adults supporting them. Due to the time allotted in the contract, service hours may vary depending on the number of applications within the region

Some options for how supports may be provided include:

  • Screen with referral for assessment and/or consultation
  • Screen with no further support required
  • Assessment with strategies and monitor or no further support
  • Assessment and consultation
  • Consultation with strategies for the school to implement with follow-up by phone or videoconference
  • Consultation with  strategies and monitor thereafter
  • Teachers can request a classroom observation and general strategies for better classroom functioning. Child specific strategies can only be provided with a completed referral (see below for process)
  • Professional development can be provided on a variety of topics
  • Teachers can reach out if they require information and resources to increase their capacity to teach a variety of children in their classroom

Which students qualify for child specific services?

  • Students that have an Alberta Education number.
  • Student must not have current funding to support programming
  • Students with severe funding or PUF funding may be able to access supports on a case by case basis if there are gaps in services and all funding has been utilized.
  • A school staff member must be available to attend consultations with students and to implement ongoing strategies.
